How to maintain a metal staircase? Tips and tricks

A metal staircase, whether indoors or outdoors, adds a modern and robust touch to your home or business. To ensure it retains its shine and strength over time, regular maintenance is essential. Here are our tips for preserving the beauty and durability of your metal staircase.

1. Clean your metal staircase regularly

For an interior staircase

  • Dusting : Use a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner to remove dust and particles that can scratch the surface.

  • Cleaning : A damp cloth moistened with soapy water (Marseille soap or a mild detergent) is sufficient to remove fingerprints or light dirt. Avoid abrasive or acidic products.

  • Drying : Wipe immediately with a dry cloth to avoid watermarks or rust formation.

For an outdoor staircase

  • Washing : Use a jet of water to remove ingrained dirt, then scrub with a soft brush and neutral soap.

  • Rust treatment : If traces of rust appear, lightly sand the area with fine sandpaper, then apply a coat of rust-preventative paint or a suitable protective product.

2. Protect the surface against corrosion

  • Paint or coating : Apply a paint specifically designed for metal (alkyd or acrylic) to protect the staircase from weathering and oxidation. Renew this protection every 2 to 3 years, depending on exposure.

  • Protective wax or oil : For stainless steel or polished metal stairs, a layer of wax or mineral oil can help preserve the shine and limit fingerprints.

3. Check and maintain the fasteners

  • Regular checks : Inspect screws, bolts and welds at least once a year. Tighten any loose parts and replace damaged components.

  • Lubrication : For moving or articulated stairs, apply a dry lubricant to the moving parts to prevent squeaking and premature wear.

4. Prevent bumps and scratches

  • Anti-slip mats or coverings : For heavily used stairs, install anti-slip strips or suitable mats to limit wear and the risk of slipping.

  • Avoid sharp objects : Do not drag metal or sharp objects on the steps to preserve the coating.

5. Hire a professional for repairs

If your staircase shows signs of advanced corrosion, deformations or stability problems, do not hesitate to call on a metalwork specialist for appropriate repair or renovation.
